Camino de Santiago pilgrim following yellow arrows through rural Spain

Finding daily purpose on the Camino

THE REAL REASON I KEEP COMING BACK TO THE CAMINO

Amongst the stunning vistas, dazzling sunshine, plentiful food, wine, cider and excellent company, there's one thing in particular about the Camino that keeps me coming back.

Let's call it purpose. That elusive quality we can spend a lifetime chasing unsuccessfully. Although I'm not talking the 'this is the reason I was put on this Earth' variety.

I'm talking about daily purpose, and the simplicity provided therein. Where you wake up in the morning and know exactly whatyou'll be doing on any given day.

Exactly what is to happen, who you are to meet and how you achieve your goal might not be so obvious just yet. But your goal for the day couldn't be clearer.

You'll be walking. Following yellow arrows and edging yourself just that little bit closer to Santiago de Compostela. Everything you do today will be helping you achieve that simple task.

The morning coffee gives you an energy boost. As does that tortilla.

Clipping that half damp towel to the back of your pack will let you dry off properly later this afternoon.

Buying that pocket-sized bag of mixed nuts and a cheeky chocolate bar will give you the motivation to make it to the next town.

Receiving another stamp on your credencial caps off another day's walking.

Indulging in the pilgrim meal that night let's you digest the day that's been, and trade tips and advice with fellow pilgrims about what's to come tomorrow.

There's never a hesitant thought.

“What should I be doing right now?”

“Do we have a plan for today?”

“Well that day went by and we did NOTHING.”

On the Caminowe have clarity and direction. We intuitively know what we need to do, and we pursue that without a fickle mind.

It's a simple, purposeful existence. It's what we crave every day.

BuenCamino!
